Even if you are lucky enough to have a large apartment, you probably want your rooms to look as spacious as possible.
Here are some designer tricks to making any space seem larger.
1) One way is to place the heaviest object at the farthest point from the entry to that room. By doing so it will give your eyes more of a view of the rest of the room helping the space feel less crowded.
2) Another way to make a room feel more spacious is to keep the entry free from furniture. Keeping the entry uncrowded will help with traffic flow and draw your eye to the whole room or furthest corner giving in a more open feel.
3) Designers suggest pulling furniture pieces away from the wall. While counterintuitive doing this will give the illusion of a more open space.
4)Traffic flow is important both for the function and appearance or a room. Try arranging your furniture in to functional areas if possible or arrange two sofas away from the walls with a small coffee table in the center. This will increase the size of travel aisles in the rooms and make the room look larger.
5) Use mirrors to add depth and dimension to your room. Larger mirrors can act as both a statement piece and room expander, but small groupings of mirrors can also be used. Mirrors extend a room and reflect light. Be mindful of where you place the mirrors so as not to highlight an area that may be less attractive. For example place a mirror on the opposite wall from a window or patio door, this will bring in light and make the room look like it extends to the outdoors. Do not place a mirror on the opposite wall from a television, storage shelving or door that is closed the majority of the time.
6) Another trick designers use to make a room look bigger is to use neutral colors or to use furniture and curtains that match the walls. It might sound boring, but it extends the depth of the room giving the appearance of a much larger room.
7)Use fewer and larger accent pieces. With a small room it seems logical to use smaller accent pieces, but the opposite is true. Instead use fewer larger pieces to give the room an uncluttered look. Try using pieces that introduce a new color by using various tones of the same color to add style without being distracting.
These designer’s tips are sure to make even the smallest space seem larger.
