New Year’s Eve Hangover Cures

Headache, Head Ache, Pain, Head, Ache, Stress, Tired
Unfortunately many of us will wake up on New Year’s day feeling a bit under the weather.  Depending on how much “fun” we had the night before, we are likely to have one or two typical hangover symptoms.  Maybe you are nauseas, have a headache, have sensitivity to light and noise, or have achy muscles. Celebrating a New Year can wreak havoc on your system leaving you feeling lousy!

First why do we feel this way?  You probably stayed up later than you typically do, so that rising sun on New Year’s day is going to be a bit hard whether you partied or not.

Alcohol, whether it was wine or champagne, it will cause dehydration and your body will work to rehydrate from within.  Imbibing also changes your body’s chemistry and your body is reacting to the toxic chemicals in the alcohol.

So, where does the cure start?  Drink a lot of water to help rehydrate yourself.   Sugary sports drinks like Gatorade can restore both liquids and electrolytes.  Coconut water is a good choice and those in the now drink Pedialyte, or better yet make popsicles out of the Pedialyte, which helps rehydrate, restore potassium, sodium, and electrolytes.

Ginger or Peppermint tea helps with nausea and fruit juice like apple or cranberry, which can kick your cure into action by restoring vitamins and giving you energy.

Pickle juice may sound gross, but the liquid contains, salt, vinegar, and water, which helps rehydreate and replenish electrolytes and sodium levels.  Two ounces is a big help.

Coffee and Aspirin can help because it gives you a surge of energy and the aspirin can help with the pounding head.  You still need to replenish liquids since coffee tends to dehydrate rather the rehydrate.

Now what to eat?   Eggs, yeah we know that doesn’t sound appealing, but they contain amino acids like taurine which boosts liver function and let’s face it, your liver needs a break today.

Bananas and Leafy Greens help restore potassium and electrolytes.  Squash, yogurt, and pumpkins are also good sources of potassium and can help.

Miso Soup can help as it helps with digestion, restores sodium, and rehydrates.
